Letter from Arthur de Carle Sowerby in China to Robert Sterling Clark in which Sowerby thanks Clark for the check he recently sent, agrees to send Clark's possessions to him, and offers some updates on the political situation. Sowerby isn't certain whether he'll be able to make any collecting trips. Warring factions have succeeded in blocking the railway between Shanghai and Hangzhou. Yongchang Lu has occupied Nanjing. Qirui Duan's government has been recognized but faces challenges from Zuolin Zhang and Yuxiang Feng. In a postscript, Sowerby says that fighting has broken out in Shanghai and what Sowerby calls "the native city" has been looted. There is a duplicate copy of Clark's check to Sowerby, drawn on the Winslow, Lanier and Co. bank of New York.
