Sowerby, Arthur de Carle, 1885-1954, correspondent |
| Title Statement | Typescript letter signed from Arthur de Carle Sowerby, Shanghai (China), to Robert Sterling Clark, New York (N.Y.), 1924 January 22 |
| Format (Extent) | 1 item (3 leaves), 1 enclosure (1 leaf), 1 enclosure (3 leaves), 1 envelope |
| Description | Letter from Arthur de Carle Sowerby in China to Robert Sterling Clark in which Sowerby gives a detailed accounting of his expenses and asks Clark to increase the amount of his annual payments. Sowerby explains that he must send money to his wife and son in England and goes on to explain that the prior salary is no longer adequate because the rate of exchange has worsened, the cost of living has increased, and the cost of travel has increased. He tells Clark that his unfurnished rooms costs $74 per month and he leads an austere, uncomfortable life with no pastimes or sports. Sowerby assures Clark that he pays his club dues and occasional evenings out dancing at cafes with the money he earns from writing for the papers, but that the 800 pounds Clark sends annually for scientific pursuit should be increased to 1000 pounds. Sowerby goes on to say though he's had recurring problems with rheumatism and gastric illness, he's planning on going to the Hangzhou district in the spring to collect specimens. He writes that there are problems with warring factions and bandits in many areas. In a note appended to the main letter, Sowerby tells Clark he's been invited to give a talk at a conference hosted by the Pan Pacific Union in Hawaii on food preservation and asks for additional funds to cover the trip. Also included are a bill from Strom and Company for storage of Clark's goods and an accounting of funds drawn on Clark's account at the Hongkong and Shanghai Bank. |

| Biographical-Historical Note | Arthur de Carle Sowerby was a naturalist, explorer and writer who accompanied Robert Sterling Clark on his 1908-09 expedition to the Shaanxi and Gansu provinces in northern China. Sowerby remained in China collecting specimens for various museums of natural history and editing the journal he'd founded, The China Journal of Science and Arts. He was interned by the Japanese during World War II and returned to the United States in 1949. RSC funded Sowerby for many years. The bulk of the correspondence dates from 1923 through 1930, with letters through 1953, the year before Sowerby's death. Most of the letters are from Sowerby, with some carbon copies of brief notes sent by RSC. The letters concern the often dire state of Sowerby’s finances as well as updates on his scientific pursuits and analyses of the tumultuous political and economic situation in China. |
